Julia Fischer
DeBartolo Performing Arts Center
February 25, 2012
Superlatives aside, simply calling Fischer a violinist is an injustice. She is a complete musician. Her conception and sense of the complete work at every instant are ever present. A solo program of Bach’s sonatas and partitas directs her impressive intellectualism and lyrical élan matched by the courage and stamina required to go beyond technique.

Critically acclaimed playwright, Sarah Ruhl, has created a laugh-out-loud, provocative and touching play about marriage, intimacy and electricity. My Fair Lady
Broadway Theatre League
February 24-February 25, 2012
One of Broadway’s enduring classics, MY FAIR LADY returns with all of the grandeur and romance that has made this musical one of Broadway’s icons. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” with book, music, and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe, MY FAIR LADY is triumphant. With “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and “Get Me to the Church on Time,” it’s no wonder everyone–not just Henry Higgins–falls in love with Eliza Doolittle.

Nrityagram Dance Ensemble
DeBartolo Performing Arts Center
March 4, 2012
An all ages performance.
Inspired by yoga, Sanskrit, meditation and martial arts, Nrityagram is a way of life and a cultural crucible. Going beyond preservation to inspiration, the ensemble’s sculptural synchronicity, compelling physicality and emotional honesty speak powerfully through the sensuous flow of Odissi, the oldest of India’s classical dance forms in a program titled Sri yah–A Decade of Dance Making.
PRE-PERFORMANCE TALK

Antígona Furiosa by Griselda Gambaro, Directed by Anton Juan
University of Notre Dame-Film, Television, Theatre
February 23-March 4, 2012
Antígona Furiosa (1986) is a re-shaping and re-telling of the Antigone story. During an interview in 1998, Gambaro had this to say about her work: “I knew I was going to subvert Sophocles’ idea, in that I was going to speak with the voices of so many women in my country who have done the exact same thing as Antigone, who disobeyed Creon’s order and threw a handful of dirt over her brother’s body, enough to uphold the tradition of an honorable burial for the dead. Antigone is every one of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo who have paid for their disobedience with their lives.”

Lea Goldman Art Exhibition
Blue Gallery
February 2-May 31, 2012
16 oil paintings by Lea Goldman are showcased at Lasalle Grill. Lea's wonderful paintings reflect concerns and challenges that human beings face in daily life. They also depict dreams and fantasies we turn to when we need a respite from our actual surroundings. Lea's stories focus on one crucial moment. Whatever happened earlier and is about to happen in the future is open to interpretation.
Lea uses imagery to describe her thoughts and day dreams.
The theatrical settings in the paintings are influenced in part by the figures and costumes of the European Comedia del Arte, an old established form of improvisational theater.

Gizmos, Corsets & Concoctions: Our Obsession with Health & Beauty
Center for History
February 11-December 31, 2012
Throughout history, people have been willing to imbibe, don and endure interesting “cure-alls” in the name of health and beauty. Medicinal and cosmetic offerings have been available, some hawked by fast-talking peddlers and others provided by highly respected institutions. Whether looking for better health, treatment for ailments, or transformation into the current pinnacle of beauty, people have turned to medical sources, even the “magic potions” of sideshows. Some did the trick; others caused more harm than good. Photographs and artifacts in this exhibit convey some of what we’ve been willing to put ourselves through in the name of health and beauty.
