University of Notre Dame Department of Music

The Department of Music at the University of Notre Dame offers intensive professional training in music to students in performance, musicology and theory. Students in the department's programs receive extensive personal attention and close supervision from a faculty that is itself extremely active in the professional musical world. The department's programs provide its majors with the opportunity to receive the essential experiences and background to help prepare them for careers in music. In addition, the department offers many opportunities for non-majors who wish to further their musical development. The department features small class sizes and well-equipped classrooms and studios, all within a University, the proud history of which extends over 150 years.

    Ilya Poletaev, Fortepiano Concert DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Ilya Poletaev, Fortepiano Concert Presented by University of Notre Dame Department of Music at DeBartolo Performing Arts Center February 11, 2012 “An expert harpsichordist, [Poletaev] played Bach on the piano as well as any I have heard. The Allemande in the Partita No. 4 in D Major, BWV 828…was an apotheosis of the spiritual dance. This pianist can play with a kind of lightness that makes the piano an old instrument. All that he played was deeply considered. There was nothing there to provide a cheap thrill. His intelligence was luminous.” – Keith Kibler, The Berkshire Eagle

    Violinist Rachel Lee and Pianist Daniel Schlosberg DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Violinist Rachel Lee and Pianist Daniel Schlosberg Presented by University of Notre Dame Department of Music at DeBartolo Performing Arts Center March 25, 2012 Rachel Lee is one of the most captivating violinists of her generation, and has already made important debuts with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony and the Berlin Staatskappelle. She joins pianist Daniel Schlosberg, Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Music, in works by Schubert, Bartok, and Richard Strauss.

      This performance was well done. The musical selections were very upbeat, energetic, and entertaining. Yet, there were moments of tranquility and peace. A very, well done event.
