South Bend Museum of Art
Located in the Century Center, the South Bend Museum of Art houses six magnificent gallery spaces. Focusing on the 19th, 20th and 21st century, the Carmichael Gallery displays permanent collection works of aesthetic and historical importance by Indiana and regional artists, works on paper by significant American artists, and large scale sculpture by contemporary artists of the region. Adjacent to the Carmichael Gallery is the Warner Rotunda, which provides excellent viewing space for large-scale pieces. The large Warner Gallery, hosts a variety of traveling exhibits, each with an average 11 week run. The Jerome J. Crowley Community Gallery is showcase to local artist groups and community outreach. Lastly, artists on display in the Art League Gallery are regional artists with works that address contemporary themes of national scope.
Beginning January 12, 2009, museum gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday, Noon-5:00 p.m. The museum is closed Monday, Tuesday and Major Holidays.

I have been thirsting for a Rickey exhibition in the general Michigan area for some time since the Pyramid Hills event was canceled. I am sure that it will be great!

To someone used to scenery of clapboard, silos, co-ops, and rusted-over water towers, it is difficult to view it as art or substance. Flatland: Imaging the Midwest explodes these otherwise flat elements and assembles them into compositions of fantasy, history, reality, and identity. Janet Bloch’s bold paintings mix whimsical and organic lines with the synthetic ones of electrical towers and mechanical gears. In another of Foutch’s series, titled, Landscapes, he takes sparseness to the extreme by demonstrating how a simple horizon line can become an an entire landscape. Karen Perl’s familiar Main Street paintings, with their multi-leveled buildings existing consecutively, and trimmed with a repetition of windows, doors, and a awnings, create the surface rust of the Midwestern story: post-industry and post-agriculture that stands around waiting for the sort of rebuilding of a Carl Sandburg’s poem. Fabulous! What a fun, exciting and intriguing exhibition by a nationally known artist. My family and I had a great time trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't. Don't miss this!!

This is an excellent exhibit of a sculptor using real life, everyday people as models for his sculptures. Traditional sculptors have used the model to capture heroic characters of the past and to cast them as dieties or mythological figures. But Mr. Hanson has captured ordinary people in ordinary poses to achieve something beyond the mythological sculptures of the past. His sculptures are able to connect with the viewer when sculptures of the past haven't been able to. This exhibit is an important exhibit to our community in that it allows the viewer to see Mr. Hansons sculptures locally without travelling to some distant city. It allows the viewer to try to comprehend what it was that the artist was trying to get across to the viewer. Sculpture isn't just for the elite but for the masses. This is a top notch exhibit and a must see. Collapse

Nicholas Sistlers point of view in each individual painting is out of this world. Yes we know it exists but never brought out as much in such an interesting way to myself. Me and a fellow classmate observed she agreed that it was like being a child, since you're looking up from below in each painting. Something that struck me were the clean lines and the mix of two totally different styles in one painting. He used flat colors and some kind of charcoal drawing. It didn't look odd because everything in that painting had a purpose. If you looked at the title you could search for the meaning in each object. Everything in them has a symbolic meaning which captures the viewer's attention and retains it. The only down side is that I wish it would be on for a longer period of time so I could take my family to see it. Collapse

A few Saturdays ago I wandered into this exhibition and was literally dumbstruck by these paintings. This is not a reaction that I have very often with works of art. Gem-like doesn't begin to describe the outrageously brilliant colors and the incredibly fine execution of these small paintings. The mystery of the story that each piece tells made me wonder what was going on - not only within the paintings, but also with the artist who created them. The sheer number of them also impressed me as a cohesive body of work that doesn't repeat itself - yet stays true to the narrative vision of the artist. I have been back to revisit them twice, and will see them again. These works are definitely some of the finest I've seen at the Regional in a while. Collapse
