42nd Street tells the story of a humble naive, young actress named Peggy Sawyer who has come to audition for a new Broadway musical. Unfortunately, due to her nervousness, Peggy arrives to the audition late and misses her chance to join the chorus. Luckily, Peggy soon catches the eye of the famous director, Julian Marsh, and he gives Peggy her big break.

However, the show's aging leading lady, Dorothy Brock, quickly grows to dislike Peggy. On opening night, Ms. Brock falls and breaks her ankle. Panic spreads through the company, as the show is doomed for closure, until it is suggested that Peggy take the roll. In only thirty-six hours, Peggy learns twenty-five pages of dialogue, six songs and ten dances.

This Tony Award winning musical includes the Broadway standards, "We're in the Money", Shuffle Off to Buffalo", "Lullaby of Broadway" and "About a Quarter to Nine".

Iving Berlin's finest hour tells the tale of Annie Oakley, the best shot around, as she manages to support her little brother and sisters by selling the game she hunts. When she's discovered by Col. Buffalo Bill, he persuades this novel sharpshooter to join his Wild West Show.

It only takes one glance for her to fall head over heels for dashing shooting ace Frank Butler, who headlines the show. She soon eclipses Butler as the main attraction which, while good for business, is bad for romance. Butler hightails it off to join a rival show, his bruised male ego leading the way, but is ultimately pitted aginst Annie in a final shoot-out.

Few, if any, Broadway musicals produced the number of memorable songs as Annie Get Your Gun, including "There's No Business Like Show Business", "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun", "They Say It's Wonderful", and "Anything You Can Do".

It’s Christmas time, 1947, and Macy’s is desperate for the perfect Santa. Macy’s personnel director, Doris, hires the charming old gent of her neighborhood, Kris, as Santa, who has befriended Doris and her skeptical daughter, Susan. Kris’ unusual practices get him into trouble, though, and when he declares himself the real Santa he is rushed to a sanity hearing. The city pours forth its support for Kris in time to save him, and just as we think Susan’s Christmas wish for a home and family will not come true, Kris comes through yet again. Just a touch of music has been added to this well-loved classic, which captures the holiday spirit of goodwill and generosity just perfectly. This fresh new version of the great classic will charm audiences of all ages!

Seven friends struggle through the tumultuous challenges of our time - a world where dreams survive muggings and starvation, where friendships withstand homelessness, where AIDS and abiding love live side by side, where drugs and sex are tempting distractions from life's harsh realities… but, finally, where guardian angels still exist. Incredible music, absorbing story, fascinating characters … A surging, life-confirming powerhouse of a musical, loosely based on the heart-pounding story from La Boheme.

A haunting, driving force runs through this highly inventive script, as Dr. Jekyll becomes increasingly conflicted and unbalanced about the truth behind his black-outs and the experimental drugs that cause them. Meanwhile, the love that has been denied Dr. Jekyll falls to Hyde through the bold Elizabeth, who loves the creature in spite of his inherent evil. Bizarre turns of events occur as Jekyll attempts to save his research, convert Elizabeth to his own, and separate himself from the creature he has increasingly become … A stunning psychological thriller.

When 12-year-old Carly moves into the neighborhood, Whit thinks she may just be the ugliest girl in the world, and then she starts digging up dirt piles! Whit’s obsession with the young scientist grows, and his friends in the GAs (Gross Associates) – a guys-only secret club – harass the devil out of him. And then the tables turn when Carly digs up dinosaur eggs, and the bright lights from camera crews coax the eggs into hatching!... or do they? Carly, transformed from neighborhood noodnik to the star of the neighborhood, proves to be a hero as well. A wonderful coming-of-age script that reminds us that someone’s best qualities are always beneath the skin, and worth digging for.

Now that the beautiful new Chris Wilson Pavilion at South Bend’s Potawatomi Park is complete—thanks to a partnership that included Community Foundation’s ArtsEverywhere initiative, the family of Christopher H. Wilson, and the Rotary Club of South Bend—it’s time to fill that magnificent space with music, theater, and dance. In July and August, the Community Foundation will partner with South Bend Parks and Recreation to present a special ArtsEverywhere performing arts series in the Chris Wilson Pavilion.

The Saturday night series, designed to celebrate the pavilion’s inaugural year, will showcase some of our area’s best talent and introduce members of our community to this new performing arts gem.

The first performance on July 17 will feature members of South Bend Civic Theatre and Elkhart Civic Theatre performing numbers from the groups’ past and future musicals.

The Acting Ensemble Stage Company presents its production of "The Tiernan Affair," a series of true events of sin and scandal in a jazz age American city…South Bend, Indiana.

Set in the 1920’s, against the familiar backdrop of downtown South Bend, The Oliver Mansion (now Copshaholm), and The University of Notre Dame, "The Tiernan Affair" looks at a Notre Dame law professor and his family torn by scandal, ripped apart by reporters, and examined in minute detail, as has become familiar fodder on the evening news and across the internet today. For months, from New York to Los Angeles, the country focused on a paternity scandal in South Bend, Indiana that set precedents in the legal world, as well as on the public eye.

Often comedic, this is a thought-provoking, dynamic, intriguing and ultimately thoroughly entertaining look at South Bend life in the not-so-distant past…Truth IS stranger than fiction!

Conceived and staged by James Geisel, featuring scene design by Erik Zagorac, lighting design by Michaela Duffy, the cast features some of South Bend’s most accomplished actors, Matthew Bell, Rick Ellis, Melissa Gard*, Kelly Geisel, Melissa Manier, Mark Moriarty, Anthony Panzica, Scot Shepley. and Nicole Brinkmann Reeves.

The famous story of a willful daughter “tamed” by a boorish gold-digger, Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew is a hilarious exploration of the trials of courtship and the power of love. Watch the relationship of Kate and Petruchio— a seemingly incompatible couple—transform from loathing into something that just might be love. Presented outdoors in a clever adaptation, The Taming of the Shrew is performed by students from the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, and several other universities from across the nation.

Join us for a special presentation of Cole Porter’s delightful musical comedy masterpiece as you’ve never heard or seen it before! Taking its inspiration from Shakespeare, Kiss Me Kate recounts the backstage and on-stage antics of two feuding romances during an out-of-town tryout for a musical adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. Sparkling with such instantly recognizable songs as “So in Love,” “Too Darn Hot,” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare,” this semi-staged concert performance features a 35-piece orchestra onstage and provides a wonderfully hummable conclusion to our 11th festival season. Two performances only!

The phenomenon known as “THE DIARY OF BLACK MEN,” a theatrical production, has been touring since 1983. This exciting and tantalizing play is the longest touring and most successful in the history of Black theatre. It’s a morality play laced with comedy and a lot of talk about manhood. The acting is high quality and the production is extremely professional. "THE DIARY OF BLACK MEN" is highly entertaining, full of energy and seductively scored.

Created and produced in 2000, the original Generic Latina was Teatro Luna’s pioneering inaugural production devised to combat the various Latina stereotypes dominating mainstream media. In honor of the 10 year anniversary of our first examination of Latina identity, the Lunáticas take on the question: What has changed for Latinas over the past 10 years? Generic Latina 2010 challenges you to confront old stereotypes and face new ones through original music, spoken word, and new autobiographical stories reflecting the diverse lives of these women: from one young woman’s legal battle to change her name, to an intimate portrait of a Brazilian’s first time wax (you mean to say that Brazilians don’t really wax that way?), to a woman’s surprise discovery that the only internationally understood reference to her own culture is West Side Story.

GL 2010 is presented in English with a sprinkle of Spanglish.

Teatro Luna, an all Latina theatre company based out of Chicago, is appearing as part of the 2010 CWIL Conference.

Living Out, by Lisa Loomer, tells the story of the complicated relationship between a Salvadoran nanny and the Anglo lawyer she works for. Both women are smart, hard-working mothers. Both want better lives for their children. The play explores what is the shared humanity between them…and what are the differences wrought by race, class and Ana's illegal status. Through Ana, we understand what it means to leave a child in another country to come here, and the potential cost of sacrificing one's own child in order to care for someone else's. Through Nancy, we understand the pressure on women today to "do it all" and the cost of making that choice. The play also looks at the prejudices and misconceptions between Anglos and Latinos. How do we make someone "the other"? What is the cost of doing so? The play is both outrageously funny and ultimately tragic.

Academy Award nominated actress Sigourney Weaver has created a host of memorable characters, both dramatic and comic, in films ranging from Ripley in Alien to Dian Fossey in Gorillas in Mist. Over the years, she has captivated audiences and won acclaim as one of the most esteemed actresses on both stage and screen.

Born and educated in New York City, Weaver graduated from Stanford University and went on to receive a Masters degree from the Yale School of Drama. Her first professional job was as an understudy in Sir John Gielguds production of The Constant Wife, starring Ingrid Bergman.

Sigourney Weaver made her motion picture debut in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster Alien. She later reprised the role of Warrant Officer Ripley in James Cameron’s Aliens, which earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress. She again brought Ripley back to life in David Fincher’s Aliens 3, which she also co-produced, and Alien Resurrection for director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Following Alien, Weaver had starring roles in three back to back hit movies: Gorillas in the Mist, in which she portrayed primatologist Dian Fossey, the Mike Nichols comedy Working Girl, and Ghostbusters II. Weaver received her second and third Academy Award nominations and was awarded Golden Globes for her performances in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. Other films include the thriller Copycat, Paul Rudnick’s comedy Jeffrey, Roman Polanski’s gripping film adaptation of Death and the Maiden, Half Moon Street with Michael Caine, Ridley Scott’s 1492, One Woman or Two with Gerard Depardieu, Eyewitness with William Hurt and Showtime’s live-action film Snow White, based on the original Grimm’s fairytale, which earned her an Emmy nomination and a Screen Actors Guild nomination.

In 1997 Weaver joined the ensemble of Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed film The Ice Storm playing alongside Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Elijah Wood and Christina Ricci. Her performance garnered her a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe nomination and a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She later gave a galvanizing performance in A Map of The World, Scott Elliott’s powerful drama based on the novel by Jane Hamilton, which earned her universal critical praise and a Golden Globe nomination for best actress. She delighted audiences with her flair for comedy, along with crewmates Tim Allen and Alan Rickman, in the science fiction comedy Galaxy Quest directed by Dean Parisot, which proved to be a hit of the 1999 Holiday season. She followed this with the popular comedy Heartbreakers, playing opposite Gene Hackman and Jennifer Love-Hewitt. In 2003, Weaver played the cold-blooded, red-headed warden in the hit comedy Holes, directed by Andy Davis and starred in the film version of The Guys, with Anthony LaPaglia, directed by Jim Simpson. Following this, Weaver appeared in M. Night Shamalyan’s The Village and received rave reviews for her performance in Imaginary Heroes written and directed by Dan Harris.

In addition to her film credits, Sigourney Weaver has also taken time to shine on the stage. Weaver started out on Off-Off Broadway in Christopher Durang’s The Nature and Purpose of the Universe, Titanic and Das Lusitania Songspiel. She and Durang co-wrote Das Lusitania which earned them both Drama Desk nominations. She has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions in New York, working with such writers as John Guare, Albert Innaurato, Richard Nelson and Len Jenkin. In regional repertory, she has performed works by Pinter, Williams, Feydeau and Shakespeare. She also appeared in the PBS mini-series The Best of Families.

Weaver received a Tony Award nomination for her starring role in Hurlyburly on Broadway, directed by Mike Nichols. She played Portia in the Classic Stage Company of New York’s production of The Merchant of Venice. In 1996, Weaver returned to Broadway in the Lincoln Center production of Sex and Longing, written by Christopher Durang.

Weaver originated roles in two A.R. Gurney world premieres, Crazy Mary at Playwrights Horizons, and Mrs. Farnsworth, at the Flea Theater. She also starred in Neil LaBute’s play The Mercy Seat, opposite Liev Schreiber, which John Lahr of The New Yorker described as offering “performances of a depth and concentration that haven't been seen in New York for many seasons.” Weaver also originated the female lead in Anne Nelson's The Guys at The Flea, where it was commissioned and directed by Jim Simpson. The Guys tells the story of a fire captain dealing with the aftermath of 9/11.

Recent films include Infamous with Toby Jones and Sandra Bullock; Jake Kasdan’s The TV Set; Snow Cake, opposite Alan Rickman; The Girl in the Park, opposite Kate Bosworth;Vantage Point with Dennis Quaid and Forrest Whitaker and the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Baby Mama. The Saint Mary's College Madrigal Singers, joined by the Early Music Ensemble from Andrews University, perform music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance in a Twenty-First Century reenactment of the Renaissance feasts hosted in the great baronial halls throughout England during the Twelve Days of Christmas. The music is conducted by Saint Mary's College professor, Nancy Menk.

Enjoy a feast reflective of one that might have been served in the Middle Ages with a menu that includes the wassail, salad, main course, and dessert. Vegetarian and children's menus also available.

*Seating is based on when order is taken.
*Special consideration is taken for children in groups, family of the cast, and college dignitaries.

A family friendly performance for all ages. Our version of the Nutcracker does not use the traditional Tchaikovsky score, yet the storyline is similar. In our story, Klara is a homeless girl living in today's busy world with the hustle... and bustle of people preparing for the holiday season. Klara is offered a gift of a broken Nutcracker doll found in the trash by another homeless person, Drosselmeyer. Drosselmeyer casts a magic spell where Klara encounters the Mouse Queen who battles with the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker transforms into a prince and takes Klara to visit the Sugar Plum Fairy and her kingdom. Along the way there are dancing snowflakes, graceful fairies, and waltzing flowers. The kingdom celebrates Klara's visit with costumes and dances from around the world. There are dances from China, Russia, Spain, Turkey, and our Native America. The Sugar Plum Fairy dances as well. Through the magical strength that Drosselmeyer gave her, Klara discovers that even a small kindness can make a difference. Klara finds her family with the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince. In the end, Klara teaches us that all people are special, no matter if they seem different or unimportant. Story and Choreograpahy for this ballet by Gregory Hancock, Artistic Director of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In the spirit of The Complete Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged), the 1998 play: The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) is an irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to the final judgment. Nothing is sacred as the cultural guerrillas tackle such great theological questions as did Adam and Eve have navels, and did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? This production puts the fun back in fundamentalism with a madcap trip through old time religion. Whether you are Catholic or Atheist, Muslim or Jew, Protestant or Purple People Eater, you will be tickled by this play. Remember… Someone is watching.

Urgent, dark, direct and fierce. Mark Lundholm’s autobiographical one-man about his scabrous path to addiction, crime, fatherhood, homelessness, rehab and, ultimately, redemption, is illuminating comedy. Now a successful standup comedian, Lundholm delivers a hard and fast 80 minutes of riveting performance theater.

Written and directed by Pat Hazell. A little subversive and a whole lot of funny is the colorful world of cable access hostess Earlene Hoople who is about to lose her snickerdoodles in front of her first Christmas Special live audience. Letters to Mrs. Claus, an outrageous family slide show and a visit from the church handbell choir hit the holiday season sweet spot. From the mastermind of baby boomer nostalgia, Pat Hazell (The Wonder Bread Years).

The Bethel College Operatic Irregulars are definitely exploring the obscure, miniature side of chamber opera this Fall Semester. The work is "Pimpinone, or the Unequal Marriage--a comic intermezzo." The composer was the incredibly prolific Georg Fhilipp Telemann, who in his own day owned a reputation higher than that of his friend Johann Sebastian Bach. "Pimpinone" has a cast of just two singers, and plays out in one hour. Come find out what made Telemann the most popular composer in Germany during the early 1700s.
