Review/Comment
Be introduced to the Bartók String Quartet during three consecutive low-key evenings. Join the Euclid Quartet for conversation about each piece prior to its performance. Presentations will be short-and-sweet to allow listeners the chance to enjoy the experience and still have time to join the Quartet for some Bar Talk afterwards. Bar Talk locations to be named at the concerts. The Euclid Quartet will perform Bartók's String Quartet No. 2 on Thursday, June 19, Quartet No. 4 on Friday, June 20 and Quartet No. 6 on Saturday, June 21. Praised by the Denver Post for their “electric” playing, the Euclid Quartet is a dynamic ensemble known for performances filled with personality and vibrant color. At appearances ranging from Carnegie Hall to school classrooms to radio and television broadcasts, the quartet has performed to high acclaim across the country. The quartet has earned significant recognition at major competitions, recently winning Third Place at the Osaka (Japan) International Chamber Music Competition, and Grand Prize at the Hugo Kauder International Competition for String Quartets at Yale University. These victories are added to top prizes already earned at the Carmel Chamber Music Competition and the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

The Euclid Quartet gives an engaging and entertaining "talk" and performance of this groundbreaking work. Although the material is dissonant, the sound techniques grab the attention of the listener in a visceral way. Friday night’s presentation helped tie together these features with the aesthetic purpose and compositional design of the work in layman's terms. After a playful demonstration of these features, the Quartet gave a spirited full performance that was satisfying on all levels and included a minor "happening" in the form of a broken viola string due to the slap pizzicato's of the fourth movement. As Luis tended to his broken string the other members threatened to tell Viola jokes in his absence. The Viola world was saved by Luis quick return. After the performance the audience was invited to join the Quartet for some "Bar Talk" at a local pub! Collapse
