Fourth Annual American Series Honors Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Painting On view in the Warner Gallery This year will be the fourth year that the South Bend Museum of Art has offered "The American Series." This series of major exhibitions was conceived with the purpose of offering our regional community a glimpse at some of the strongest artists and artistic movements in this country. Throughout its history, painting has been shaped by a range of technological innovations in conversation with ever-changing aesthetic and theoretical concerns. The artists in Surface Tension reveal the vast range of forms possible through the application of pigment to a surface and reflect the ways that contemporary painting draws from, adds to, and redefines its own history. This exhibition was organized by the museum's Curator of Exhibitions, Jason Lahr, and includes work by some of this country's most innovative and beloved contemporary artists. The focus is on painting, emphasizing the diversity of approaches, effects and imagery possible with this age-old medium and reflects multiple traditions, including Italian Renaissance masters; Abstract Expressionism; Dutch 17th Century still life; Boschian fantasies, and Super Realism, to name a few. Selected artists include: Julie Heffernan (P.P.O.W. Gallery, New York, NY) David Kroll (Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago, IL) Leah Tinari (Mixed Greens, New York, NY) Howard Fonda (Mixed Greens, New York) Margie Livingston (Greg Kucera Gallery, Seattle, WA) Brian Alfred (Haunch of Venison, New York, NY) Dan Gamble (Zg Gallery, Chicago, IL) Jane Callister (Peter Miller Gallery, Chicago, IL) Laurie Hogin (Peter Miller Gallery, Chicago, IL) In order to take best advantage of the educational opportunities of this exhibition, the museum will offer related educational programs and elements.
