"My oil paintings are a unique blend of representational images that routinely break the boundaries between the abstract and the realistic. The freedom to utilize abstract or two-dimensional shapes in an otherwise representational framework allows for a complementing freedom in my palette, and enhances a conceptual response. I’ve always admired Kandinsky as a progenitor of abstract art. His work helped validate for me the overt use of design and composition in my own paintings, which was reinforced by my work as a graphic designer.

The viewer, hopefully, will be drawn not to process or technique, but to the challenge of an image to be deconstructed, a metaphor to be revealed. I try to keep the paths of meaning open to interpretation, much as a poet touches people differently with the dualities in language. My greatest compliment is when different people see entirely different messages in my work, or even when one individual sees more than one idea. I liken the abstract painter’s focus on paint to the melody, and the realist’s focus on imagery to the lyrics of a song. Its important to have both in a painting. To me, art should still have something to say. My recent work “Schism” is a selection in 2010’s American Art Collector. A full range of work can be seen at myartspace.com.” - Jerry Mannell This exhibit continues through June 28.
