Art on Exhibit: April 29—May 31, 2010 These two area artists and educators bring together a contemporary selection of mixed media paintings and ceramics.
“Much of my work is abstract, design-oriented imagery that is nature based. But, I often enjoy drawing improvised floral arrangements. Utilizing line, I create abstracted flower forms that allow me to seek a variety of shapes and colors. Some of these stylized, meandering lines have a geometrical component. I enjoy the process of working with “accidental” marks thrown on the surface. My goal is to enjoy the challenges I set up, and hope that the viewer sees and enjoys the same.” -Mary Burke
“I work in clay and in the last few years I have started adding glass to some of my pieces. One of the things I enjoy about this is the relationship between the media and the process of creating the work. The light carrying properties of the glass remind me of reflection, transcendence, imagination and the inspiration of the idea. The clay represents the more immediate, structural and human qualities I associate with the earth. My work is usually abstract and I like to create forms that represent the ideas I am grappling with at that time. The idea is a starting point for the piece, although I am amazed at how many times the essence of the piece is nonverbally communicated to the viewer. I have over 20 years experience teaching college art courses. I currently have a studio at the Box Factory for the Arts and am a member of Chartreuse Arts Co-op, both located in St. Joseph.” -Jan Kimball
