The annual Spring Art Walk is always the first Saturday in May. This year, ten galleries in and near downtown South Bend will open their doors on Saturday, May 1 from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The event is produced by Kathy Reddy White, owner of Circa Arts Gallery. All galleries represent local artists. Experience art, music, food and fun on the Colfax Arts Corridor, the Lincoln Way West Arts Corridor as well as on Mishawaka Ave., which houses one of the newest additions to the Walk, Max Black Fine Art. The latest addition to the Art Walk is Junk Evolution / Carpenter Gothic and Max Black Fine Art.

Bernie & Linda Sherck and Char Osborn Swoveland form the team called junk evolution. Char and Linda have backgrounds in Art and Interior Design and Bernie is a talented artist and woodworker. In this throw away society they decided to go Green and use items that may be past their prime or no longer used in their original form, and bring them back to life better than before. They embrace the French style of decorating because it uses quality, time worn pieces found at flea markets and a mix of styles. They also do custom work, and offer design services, faux finish painting, and party planning. Carpenter Gothic is rough old items that have the potential to be re-created into works of art. Rediscovered pieces of furniture and architectural details from the past are used to bring about new pieces. The end result reflects whimsical and caring reflections on historically based craftsmanship. Odd bits of furniture, vintage pottery, lamps, suitcases and other surprising treasures add to the fun and creativity.

Max Black Fine Art is a fine art gallery representing a unique blend of Contemporary Impressionism, Expressionism, Abstract, Modern Masterworks, and Sculpture by leading artists renowned for conveying life and energy through their work. They are located next to Bamber’s Superette and near the Farmer’s Market on Mishawaka Ave.
