The folk arts in the exhibit represent useful items made by hand by craftsmen who added creative, artistic design or decoration to patterns that they inherited from earlier folk artists. Most of the items in the exhibit are examples from early in the history of Elkhart County.

A special section includes folk arts made by Elkhart County residents today who continue early traditions. All are from the permanent collection of the county museum. Among the historic items made by county residents are a toy mechanical carousel by Dr. Robert M. Murphy of Elkhart; four musical instruments by Joe Wright of Goshen; whirligigs by Norvell Aust of Bristol and Argus Meyer of New Paris; a self-portrait by James Mayfield of Goshen; a calligraphic motto by F.S. Rellinger of Foraker; a reverse painting on glass by Loyal Ressler of Nappanee; and a painting by Emma Schrock of Wakarusa. Other items include a cigar store Indian, shop signs, a rifle, wood inlay, fraktur baptismal records, quilts and other needlework, wreaths in shadow boxes, toys and pottery.
