The Euclid Quartet concludes their 209-2010 season with Béla Bartók's String Quartet No. 1 in a minor, Op. 7 and Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in d minor "Death and the Maiden." The Euclid Quartet was formed in 1998 in Ohio and was appointed Resident String Quartet at Indiana University South Bend in 2007. Praised by the Denver Post for their “electric” playing, they have earned significant recognition at major competitions, recently winning Third Place at the Osaka (Japan) International Chamber Music Competition, and Grand Prize at the Hugo Kauder International Competition for String Quartets at Yale University. These victories are added to top prizes already earned at the Carmel Chamber Music Competition and the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. They recently performed with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The quartet, whose members are Jameson Cooper, Jacob Murphy, Luis Vargas, and Si Yan Darren Li, is committed to exposing young audiences to the joy of chamber music, and frequently performs programs tailored towards children, including a series of performances as “musical explorers” at Carnegie Hall. They also partner with the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association to bring chamber music to area schools, and commissioned “Symphonies of String Instruments” by James Leatherbarrow which provides a unique opportunity for string students to perform along-side a professional string quartet.
