Ford’s epic meditation on racism, obsession, paranoia and the myth of the West influenced films into the 1970s. John Wayne gives perhaps his most powerful performance as an embittered Civil War veteran tracking his kidnapped niece, but it's Ford's most carefully framed, lit and composed images that shape this masterwork from start to finish.
