Opening Reception for Featured Artists - Joe Ruthrauff · Robert Kuntz · Brooks Cashbaugh · Robert Hardt - and an Ongoing Exhibit of Gallery Artists: Mike Amato, Elizabeth Coyne, James Deeb, Nick Donovan, Linda Freel, Lea Goldman, Kim Hoffmann, Phil Monteith, Joe Ruthraff, Mike Slaski, Dick Tripsansky, Jackie Welsh, and Harold Zisla.
Four Featured Artists will have an opening reception at New Galleries on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
The exhibit will give visitors a variety of new 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works to see. In addition, the paintings, printmaking, digital art of the thirteen Gallery Artists will be exhibited. The Featured Sculptors will be Robert Hardt and Bob Kuntz.
Hardt was interested in painting from childhood and started studying at the San Francisco Art Institute. However, an income shortage forced Robert to switch to construction, which he had learned when working with his father in rural Illinois. While working in construction in Phoenix over 15 years, Robert taught himself woodblock printing and practiced it regularly. Hardt, moving back to the Midwest over 14 years ago, has come full circle – he now occasionally does construction while art has become his central focus. Currently he says he is obsessed with “whirly gigs”.
Bob Kuntz is a South Bend resident who creates elegant, semi abstract wood sculptures from beautifully finished fine wood. The natural world is his inspiration, with “A Bird in Flight” an example of his appreciation for dynamic forms in motion.
Joe Ruthroff and Brooks Casbaugh are our 2-dimensional Featured Painters who have diverse styles. Joe Ruthraff is a plein air painter who painted extensively in Florida and now wanders around his South Bend neighborhood painting interesting paintings he happens upon in his surroundings. His moods vary - bright sunshine energizes either very large paintings of imposing vertical fuel storage towers, the Drewery’s brewery building or a woman gardening; a streetlight barely illuminating a house casts a veil of mystery over a smaller, intimate painting.
Brooks Casbaugh, is a young local painter who works in gouache and ink on paper, in a loose contemporary style using dramatic, vibrant swaths of color. His paintings are either abstracts, like his “Moon River” or portray people in their relationships and roles. This summer he produced a series of gouache and ink paintings about the allure of 'The Road' for Midwestern and Western Americans.
