Innovation: George Rickey Kinetic Sculpture - Extended!!
September 26, 2009-November 14, 2010
Add Review/CommentINNOVATION EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 14, 2010 Innovation: George Rickey Kinetic Sculpture, South Bend’s collaborative exhibition celebrating the life and work of internationally renowned artist George Rickey, will be in town longer than originally planned. Rather than leave in September, the five large-scale Rickeys in downtown South Bend will remain in place until November 14, 2010. In addition to giving local residents two more months to enjoy these exceptional sculptures, this extension—granted by Philip Rickey, George’s son, who heads the George Rickey Estate and the George Rickey Foundation—will give visitors in town for Notre Dame football weekends a chance to see the multi-ton works and learn about Rickey’s South Bend connection. A native of South Bend, Rickey was the son of a mechanical engineer who worked for Singer Sewing Machine. His unique kinetic sculptures—work that combines art and engineering into what one critic describes as “a playground for the eyes”—are known throughout the world for their graceful, natural movement and sleek, shimmering, stainless steel beauty. South Bend and Notre Dame are special places to the Rickey family; Notre Dame’s Snite Museum of Art is the home of the George Rickey Sculpture Archive, a promised gift of the George Rickey Foundation. For Innovation: George Rickey Kinetic Sculpture, six partners—the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s ArtsEverywhere Initiative, South Bend Museum of Art, Notre Dame’s Snite Museum of Art, the George Rickey Foundation, the Estate of George Rickey, and 1st Source Bank—joined forces to bring a rich range of Rickey-related resources to our community during 2009 and 2010. The City of South Bend also provided invaluable assistance, making it possible to place these works downtown. Innovation: George Rickey Kinetic Sculpture has drawn visitors to our community from throughout the region and beyond, enhancing South Bend’s reputation and creating opportunities for new tourism business. Rickey’s magnificent sculptures lift our collective spirits, and—as other local collaborations develop that involve MIND, Innovation Park, and Ignition Park—create a model for South Bend’s future: A group of committed partners, bringing together unique assets to change our community for the better.
