In a Gotham-like city, a depleted water supply has lead to a government-enforced ban on private toilets; corporate greed adds fuel to the fire as all who oppose the regime are carted off to "Urinetown". But hope arrives in the form of, well, Hope Cladwell, and amidst the satire, a heroine rises to lead them all to freedom. Directed by Carrie Lee Bland-Kendall, Phoebe Brubaker, and Laura Gouin.

      Urinetown is a wonderfully unique show that will have those who love musicals AND those who don't splitting their sides with laughter; as it openly pulls plot lines and tender moments from well known... Expand

      Urinetown is a wonderfully unique show that will have those who love musicals AND those who don't splitting their sides with laughter; as it openly pulls plot lines and tender moments from well known musicals and films ("Titanic", "West Side Story", and "Les Miserables" to name a few). It is unabashedly entertaining and full of surprises, with a witty and creative soundtrack I later found myself seeking out. Bits of the story reminded me of some issues we deal with in our country today, as well as both sides of the political spectrum. As a whole I found it in good fun. Bonus: The theatre offers via reservation a "dinner theatre" option, where you can (inexpensively!) enjoy local Tapas before the show! Collapse

      Given its off-putting title, this fast-paced musical is surprisingly enjoyable, witty, thought-provoking, and yes, even appropriate for older children. I attended with my 10-year-old son who particularly enjoyed the satirical comments on musical comedy voiced by the policeman narrator (Michael Hanft) and Little Sally (Monica Sherer). In fact, my son left the show inspired to write a story of his own with a similarly satirical narrator. While the show is a satire, it offers some terrific musical numbers, ably supported by pianist LaRita Craft, that will "plunge" your hearts, or, rather, "plumb" the depths of your emotions. Finally, it's got a right-on message for today's economic hard times that justifies the price of admission. Collapse

      Already by the second scene I had nearly wet myself with laughing...only in Urinetown that would be a capital offense. The show satirizes a number of famous musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story, plus the farce makes fun of many traditional musical theater conventions. Any musical theater buff will get a huge kick out of the show. The only real issue is ensuring a good seat in the theater. Go early and try to sit in the center. You do not want to miss some of the ridiculous bits and off-the-wall characters. I'm going to see it again because there is too much to see in one viewing. It's a small theater with not much for a budget but the cast is strong vocally and with good unity and comic timing. New World Arts has had many strong shows before and proven that community theater can still be an immensely powerful tool for entertainment, community, and challenging, thought-provoking material.Urinetown raises the bar in the biggest, funniest New World show yet.
