Instructor: Keland Scher (Barnum & Bailey Circus and Cirque du Soleil) Workshop Description: Through the experience of imagination, creativity, innocence, and play the actor will discover his or her sense of gravity and levity, range of breath, physical awareness, and emotional connection. Experience the pleasure of the clown nose and the freedom and joy in the unknown. Playing in the unknown is how the magical, fantastic space between audience and actor is created. This workshop will be very physical involving group games and partner clowning exploration.
Instructor Bio: Keland Scher has been teaching for 10 years and recently completed two year as a full time Assistant Professor in Theatre and Movement in Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He has worked as a professional actor on Shakespeare, classical pieces, original devised ensemble creations and contemporary pieces, improvisational theatre, buffoon, and clown work for such companies as the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival, The Alliance Theater (Atlanta), Out of Hand Theater (Atlanta),and the Big Apple Circus (New York), and for First Folio (Chicago). He has taught for York University (Toronto), Cirque du Soleil (Atlanta and New York), Emory University (Atlanta), and the Big Apple Circus (New York). Keland professionally coached, choreographed and directed theatre for the past 6 years. He received his MFA in acting as well as a diploma in the teaching of movement for actors from York University. He also has a certification in embodied developmental yoga from the School for Body-Mind Centering® (Amherst, MA). He has studied with such prominent artists as Bill Irwin, Avner Eisenberg (Celebration Barn), Kenny Raskin (Cirque du Soleil), Jeff Wirth, and Mike Kennard (Mump & Smoot). Reviews: “The crowd-pleaser is Keland Scher, a professional circus clown and Shakespeare festival veteran (try to find another one of those!) In addition to playing Puck, Scher works the crowd during the pre-show and intermission. Scher is impossible to dislike as Puck. He manages to make Shakespearean English as clear to the ear as coffee-house chat.” - The Knoxville News-Sentinel “A Clowning Puck sets the scene with pre-show juggling and audience participation shenanigans. He is the show’s mascot of sorts, and he wields Shakespeare’s language as well as he tosses flame-tipped sticks.” -Knoxville’s Weekly Voice
