Kiss Me Kate
September 16-November 2, 2008
Add Review/CommentPeru, Indiana's Cole Porter is no stranger to any stage in America. But of all his hits, Kiss Me Kate is considered universally as his masterpiece and one of the most sophisticated and finely crafted musicals of all time. Kiss Me Kate is a musical within a musical, altogether appropriate, since its source material, Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, was a play within a play. The story revolves around two once-married, now divorced musical theater actors who are performing opposite each other in a Broadway-bound musical version of Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew. Already on poor terms, the pair begin an all-out emotional war mid-performance that threatens the production's success. The only thing keeping the show together are threats from a pair of gangsters, who have come to collect a gambling debt from one of the show's actors. In classic musical comedy fashion, slapstick madness ensues before everything is resolved. Musical numbers include "Another Op'nin, Another Show," "Too Darn Hot," and "Wunderbar." Kiss Me Kate is considered one of Broadway's treasures and won 5 Tony Awards in 1948 including Best Musical and Best Score.
