Carry the Zero is a collection of oils, drawings and mixed media carrying a common thread that connects the work best described using a memory from his childhood. When he learned his multiplication tables in primary school, he was both intrigued and frightened by the fact that anything multiplied by zero is zero. He imagined that any number that came in contact with zero was annihilated, like crossing the event horizon of an arithmetic black hole. He remembers staying home from school with a fever and he hallucinated being stalked by the same unraveling zero. He sensed its presence by an expanding ring of sound quieter than silence that proceeded it. He ran from room to room, trying to hide, but it always found him. Fear became terror, and he found himself at the back of the house ready to fling himself down the basement steps in order to escape. The phone rang, and the spell was broken. He’s heard that sound a handful of times since then, as if it’s always there but he’s not always able to perceive it. With this work, he wonders if that sound causes all things to unravel. Minds. Bodies. Planets. Stars. With this work, he wonders if all things carry the zero.
