"I am a realistic painter but my work depicts the heavy influence of ready-made sculpture. Research into mass production, departmental isolation and community has led to places, such as northern Indiana, that are rich with industrial resources. The pastel work in the series, Beyond Object, strives toward bringing about an awareness of the organic qualities of the industrialized object. I am the product of a Midwestern, post-industrial depression that has forced a reestablishment of identity—one beyond the familiarity of the assembly line. After years of working in the manufacturing plants of northern Indiana, I no longer see a difference between an object and its maker. I am the object, in the process of transformation, in the act of discovering something beyond the grey familiar. This background is not necessarily important for the viewer to see or understand. But there is hope that the beauty of transformation comes through and that the viewer may delight in these possibilities as well. The newest work, created from protective hazmat suit, scrap wire fencing, and insulation board, magnifies the ethereal space between boundary and beyond. I am intrigued with the tension, power, struggle, and psychological components that exist within this gap. Always in motion, expanding and waning, the gap is an ever changing organic force. The wall sculptures of this exhibition are designed to place the viewer in the midst of such energy. The audience is meant to feel a tangible spatial strain as each sculpture pushes outward and pulls inward against restraints. While aesthetically exciting, one of the most powerful aspects of this ‘in between’ area is the viewer’s psychological interpretation. Is the inward dependency of a convex form claustrophobic or comforting? Does an object pushing past boundaries represent an act of triumph or defeat? The goal of this work is to not to glorify the agony of struggle or praise the freedom of overcoming, but rather to participate and revel in the beauty of the active intangible found between the two". -Angela Leed.
