The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at Indiana University South Bend presents An Evening of Electronic Music.. The performance will feature new electronic music and video by students, faculty and PLATO & the Western Tradition. The concert will open with student works by Manual Ortiz, Valerie Rumpf, Michael Stebbins and David Tevlin. Music technology faculty members Kay Kizer and Darrel Tidaback will also present pieces. After intermission PLATO & the Western Tradition will perform an improvisation including video. Performers in this ensemble include David K. Barton, music and video; Marie Fryer, keyboard; Joshua Bonham, viola; and Michael Nolan, guitar. The Electronic Music Program at IU South Bend provides students the opportunity to improvise using electronic or computer-based instruments, amplified instruments and voice. The Electronic Music Ensemble rehearses weekly and members often perform with PLATO & the Western Tradition. PLATO & the Western Tradition, A Postmodern Improvisation Ensemble, began in 1988 under the direction of David Barton and Boyd Nutting. The ensemble has included over 100 musicians over the past 20 years, many of whom have been students and faculty members at IU South Bend. Under the premise of getting together, connecting to a recording system and playing, PLATO & the Western Tradition has recorded well over 1,600 improvisations and produced over 100 hours of video art.
