DejaView is a show about culling from the past to create a body of work in the present. Four local artists have done just that. Their approaches are unique yet they work together stylistically to create a cohesive show.

Jacquee Dickey About the medium and art of polaroid images: Each image, one of a kind, is similar to a monoprint. The polaroid dyes help to lend a dreamlike quality, similar to washes of watercolor, and serve to create a emotional tonality in the portrait. The small size invites one into an intimate relationship with the subject. These works also outside of time, which reminds us of the eternality of human relationships.

Christine Tirotta “As a conscientious recycler and collector of old objects, it gives me great pleasure to give new life to old materials with endless possibilities.” Christine’s use of religious imagery reminds us of the importance of religion throughout history, including the present.

Ellen Ridenour creates a social awareness of the average (or not so average) American. One gets the sense that social misfits and oddities are very much in our midst and that they have always been there. Her handmade paper works talk about mundane things shown to us in a creative way. Bingo contains common thoughts that people would have from any time period. The Chinese symbol pair feel old and new at the same time, which remind us of an ancient culture in our midst.

Gary White is the creator of the unique assemblages that he refers to as Carpenter Gothic. He has a keen eye for rough old items that have the potential to be re-created into works of art. Starting with rediscovered pieces of furniture and architectural details from the past he performs his magic to bring about new pieces. The end result reflects his whimsical and caring reflections on historically based craftsmanship.
