BLUE DAHLIA RETURNS! Join us for a special Sound of Silents screening with bLuE daHLia performing their original musical score for the spooky and funny silent classic "The Cat and the Canary". See the very first midnight will reading, the first creepy housekeeper, the first conniving family after a fortune in diamonds, and more! Paul Leni, an ex-patriot German expressionist with a funny-bone, made "The Cat and the Canary" a can’t-miss blend of horror and camp, featuring a cast of brilliant comic and character actors.
bLuE daHLia adds burlesque vamping, vibraphone-driven social commentary, a song of palindromes, loco Latin grooves, a touch of reggae and Rimsky-Korsakov. . The exotic ripples through each composition, blending textural guitars, melodic bass, and soaring multi-lingual vocal harmonies with ethnic, orchestral percussion and delicate woodwind accents. An independent band formed in 1995, bLuE daHLia has completed six arresting studio releases and continues to create a captivating hybrid of world fusion and adult alternative. Drawing on extemporaneous global influences, bLuE daHLia's constantly evolving style has blossomed into a “soundtrack for life”. “This isn’t a band that easily can be classified or that falls neatly into traditional venues. Yet the decidedly noncommercial sound is what makes bLuE daHLia so captivating and capable of diverse appeal. What bLuE daHLia does best is its own brand of artistically driven music.”
bLuE daHLia began a decade of visual arts collaboration when they received their first commission from the Sound of Silents Film Festival. Not unlike the Alloy Orchestra and Devil Music Ensemble, bLuE daHLia’s work with vintage film takes a modern approach to film scoring, as found in today's independent and major film releases. Using a broad range of instrumentation and style, bLuE daHLia has composed over 11 silent film scores for live performance. Varying in emotional tenor from slapstick romantic comedies to drama and horror, these intricately orchestrated works are forging connections between great films, music, and generations in audiences everywhere. “bLuE daHLia’s indisputably contemporary approach to film scoring challenges typical notions of silent film accompaniment… and weaves aural tapestries that prove as entrancing as Clara Bow’s immortal screen performance.” - 2004 Waterfront Film Festival.
bLuE daHLia has contributed to independent films including CINE Golden Eagle Award winner An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Londinium Productions’ Kalamazoo? and the indie short, Abductees. Royal Caribbean, Cunard Cruise Lines, and The Lincoln Center's Education for the Arts program are among many who have commissioned bLuE daHLia 's commercial and artistic works. bLuE daHLia offers a diverse catalogue of finished music which can be licensed through Jerusalem Cherry Publishing and BMI, New York.
