FTT Talks Presents: Chul Heo of Korea University

In his talk, Dr. Heo will draw parallels between the Korean economic crisis in 1997 and its following repercussions with the transforming production style in Korean television melodrama throughout its history. Through the analysis of Korean melodramas aired on Seoul Broadcasting Service (SBS), Metropolitan Broadcasting Company (MBC) and Korea Broadcasting Service (KBS) such as Wedding Dress, You and I, and An Officer and a Gentleman, Dr. Chul concludes that the transformation in production style proved the existence of a new national consciousness regarding economy, politics and culture in Korea. Dr. Chul will explain how the medium of Korean television was, and still is, negotiated as both public sphere and aesthetic entertainment.
