The Seneca Duo makes its debut at IU South Bend. The Duo, a cello/piano ensemble, features Carrie Cimildoro-Beem on cello and Jennifer Muñiz on piano; both performers also serve as members of the part-time faculty at the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend.

The Seneca Duo will present Schumann’s Fantasiestucke, Op. 73, Debussy’s Sonate pour violincello et piano, Prokofiev’s Sonata in C Major for Cello and Piano, Op. 119 and the world-premiere of Elegy for Piano and Cello by Carol Kapson. The program is set to include a Romantic piece (Schumann), a meditative piece (Debussy) and a piece that ends with a sense of hope (Prokofiev) to work in union with Kapson’s Elegy.

Elegy for Piano and Cello was commissioned by Janet and Dean Strycker as part of a larger body of work titled “Private Issues – Shared Release.” Strycker says “The whole effort is about how we can use the Arts to express human emotions and needs. We all have private issues and by sharing in a variety of ways we experience a shared release from our burdens.” Strycker approached Carol Kapson to compose the piece. Kapson is a graduate from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts with a Master’s Degree in music composition and is currently a member of the Arts Foundation Board. She says “When Dean approached me to write a composition in memory of his son, I was both honored and humbled. I wanted to explore the concept of grief and tried to tap into my own emotions as well. What emerged was a loose interpretation of the various stages of grief, from denial, anger and pain, to reflection, acceptance and hope.”

While the concert is not about loss, this piece is certainly a feature within the program. Cimildoro-Beem and Muñiz share a strong passion for the Arts and Community Outreach. In an unusual coincidence and serving as an example of their drive to instill a love of the Arts in young musicians, they have both served as Executive Director of the South Bend Youth Orchestra; Muñiz previously and Cimildoro-Beem currently. The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts is pleased to present a concert that represents all facets of our educational experience. From student to composer to board member, Carol Kapson, encompasses the qualities we look to graduate in students from the School. Having her composition performed by faculty members, in their IU South Bend debut, with their strong dedication to art, education and community makes this concert truly exceptional.
