The Snite Museum of Art and the Institute for Latino Studies announce the eighth annual Day of the Dead celebration events, cosponsored by the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Campus Ministry, and Multi-cultural Student Programs and Services.

On Thursday, October 30, 7:00 p.m. the Snite Museum will celebrate the observance of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and dedication of ofrendas (altars). Preceding this event will be a Day of the Dead Folk Art Workshop on October 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Snite Museum. Each year the Snite Museum of Art and the Institute for Latino Studies collaborate to bring an artist to campus who will construct an installation for Day of the Dead. This year’s artist is Erik Chavez Santiago. The Chavez family has been creating woven textiles in the traditional patterns of their Zapotec cultural heritage for four generations. Throughout the years, the family has continued using natural materials for dying their wool like insects, minerals, and plants. The Chavez family weaves ancient designs such as Diamonds, copies of the carvings found at the nearby Mitla ruins, the Undulating Eye, the Tree of Life and many more. All of these Zapotec designs have great cultural, social and historical significance for the people living in the Valley of Oaxaca. In 2007 Erik and his father demonstrated their family’s dying and weaving techniques during a workshop sponsored by the Snite Museum and the Institute for Latino Studies. Erik will return to create an ofrenda in the Oaxacan-tradition for the Snite’s event this year. Complimentary traditional Mexican refreshments will be served, music by Mariachi ND will be provided, performances by Notre Dame’s Ballet Folkloric Azul y Oro will be given, and free Dia de los Muertos T-shirts will be available for the first fifty guests.

In collaboration with the visit to the Snite, the Chavez family will have a weaving sale in the Rotunda Gallery at the South Bend Museum of Art on October 31, 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and November 1, 2;00 p.m. to 5;00 p.m. A gallery talk will be given at 3;00 p.m. This provides an excellent and rare opportunity to purchase the gorgeous textiles.
