“For as long as I can remember I have loved drawing and painting animals and people. As a child I spent hours painting and drawing at our family's summer home in Sawyer. Though I was born an artist, my family didn’t think that was a realistic career option so they directed me toward the sciences. As a child I wanted to be a Veterinarian until I realized that I would be working with sick animals. Then, in college I considered becoming a psychologist until I realized, there too, I would be working with the sick. That dilemma unresolved, I left school to get married and raise a family. Several years later I decided to take an art class, a decision that would change my life. I couldn’t get enough of art and just kept studying, earning a BA degree from Lake Forest College in Studio Arts and an MFA degree from Northern Illinois University in Painting and Drawing. While in college, I also studied mythology, a subject I continue to find fascinating. The hero's quest; the stories of conquest and disappointment, love, rage and grief ring as true for us today as they did thousands of years ago. In essence, it was the first psychology, an early attempt to understand life on earth and human behavior. It is the subject of theater, opera, literature, painting and sculpture through history. This exhibition examines myth and myth making through portraits. In mythology, the gods often came to earth disguised by masks or in animal forms. Some of the paintings are details from famous historic periods of art such as Black Attic sculpture, Etruscan tombs or Renaissance masters. The colors reflect the mood of the subject and are designed to invite you to make up your own stories about the people portrayed. I have used a checkered theme in some of the works which is my attempt to show the digitalized world we live in. Everything is being reduced to pixels. The masks came from Venice and were part of Carnival, which is a re-enactment of the plague years, another way to try and understand life on earth and human behavior.” -Kristy Pokorny.
