The exhibit features black and white photography by Ben Golden. A keen observer of life around the globe, the artist records his visit to Berlin and captures the transformations as East and West are still trying to merge, traces of the Jewish German past remain, and the juxtaposition of history and present are everywhere.

      “The wall is gone. East and West are still trying to merge, and there still remain many traces of the glorious German Jewish past.” The speaker of that statement is Ben Golden, a photographer, and the city he speaks of is Berlin, a word which itself sparks images of Nazism. And Nazism is a word which Berlin is still sorting out. Golden, whose photography has appeared in Leica Magazine, The Chicago Cultural Center, DeGrazia Gallery, Tucson, Arizona, and Temple Shalom of Chicago, is currently on display in the Jewish Federation Building in South Bend. In 2005 Golden traveled to Germany to photograph Berlin as part of his Holocaust portfolio. Many of the images are of cemeteries and monuments. Golden notes that “memorials [are] placed into everyday life, intermixed with everyday activities as a constant reminder of the grey area between good and evil.” According to dictionary.com, the term “memorial” serves to “celebrate or honor the memory of a person or an event.” Collapse
