The 2005 purchase of 97 figurines from the Jay C. Leff Collection by Advisory Council member Dorothy Griffin along with the 2004 donation of 20 figurines by Peter David Joralemon provide the opportunity to exhibit a large, stunning, range of Mesoamerican human images, examine them closely and reflect upon their functions. In addition to defining the aesthetic values of figurines from the Olmec civilization and the Tlatilco, Xochipala, Ticoman, Mezcala, Michoacan and Chupicuaro cultures, the exhibition will survey the social and religious beliefs of figurine users as well as the physical disabilities and medical conditions found among them. While The Dragon and the Goddess Gallery of Mesoamerican Art illustrates the story of Mesoamerican art, this exhibition focuses on the figurine as art form, and does so with some of the most important examples from the history of collecting Mesoamerican art in the United States.
