THEATRE

Design for Living
November 8-November 20, 2005
Add Review/CommentNoel Coward's high-spirited, charming comedy involves three eccentric characters who seem completely unable to live with or without one another. The show originally opened in 1933 at the height of the Depression, and remains fresh and engaging today because of its focus on morality, marriage, and the creative spirit. DESIGN FOR LIVING begins in Paris, with three British upper-class bohemians who share an intense closeness: Gilda, an interior decorator; Otto, a painter; and Leo, a playwright. When her atempts at any sort of conventional relationshp with either of the two men fail, Gilda-in exasperation-marries a stufy art dealer, and moves to New York City. The mariage is a dull one, and Gilda finds herself bored and unable to be creative in her work. Then, to her surprise, Otto and Leo suddenly apear on her dodorstep, proposing a less traditional design for living. This Event in the News
