Sebastião Salgado is considered one of the finest living documentary photographers. He was born in Brazil, and was educated as an economist before he began photographing in Latin America in 1973. After that project, he collaborated with Doctors Without Borders to document the terrible effect of the drought in North Africa, especially in the Sahel. Between 1986 and 1992 Salgado photographed manual laborers all over the world. From 1993-1999, he documented the terrible situations of homeless and displaced people, a global problem. From this project he published two books in 2000, Migration and The Children. Most recently, he has completely reversed his interests, and is documenting the places that haven't been destroyed by the industrial world, such as Antarctica and the Amazon jungle. In the introduction to Migrations, he wrote, "More than ever, I feel that the human race is one. There are differences of color, language, culture and opportunities, but people's feelings and reactions are alike. People flee wars to escape death, they migrate to improve their fortunes, they build new lives in foreign lands, they adapt to extreme hardship·." Salgado has worked exclusively in black-and-white, and his photographs in this exhibit are courtesy of the Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York.
