Visitors to the O’Shaughnessy Galleries this fall will come face to face with a wide variety of women who lived in Asia in the 19th-century. They survive today in photographs, taken in such “exotic” places as India, Tibet, China, Vietnam, Korea, the Philippines, Bali, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Burma (now Myanmar), Siam (now Thailand) and Japan. They range from the 1860s through the turn of the century. Among the fifty images are women noted for their beauty, weavers, peasants, dancers, temple attendants, mothers with children, families, tea pickers, waitresses courtesans, and others. Some of the photographs have been delicately hand-painted, a practice common in Japan, where colorists of woodblock prints found new work in the photographic studios. The photographs have been selected from a much larger number of prints, assembled in only two years, thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of Robert E, (ND ’63) and Beverly (SMC ’63) O’Grady. A future exhibit of the entire collection, with a catalogue, is being planned.
