The Saint Mary’s College Communications and Performance Studies Department proudly begins the 2005-2006 season with William Shakespeare’s classic Scottish tale of prophesy, intrigue, murder, deceit, and final comeuppance. “Macbeth,” composed at a time when the mere mention of witches and like devilry produced genuine fear in the hearts of men, has continued to attract and entrance audiences throughout the centuries. A timeless and perhaps all-too-human theme, the macabre appeal is as undeniable as it is delectable. What is at the core of our obsession with this most famous of Shakespeare’s tragedies? Is it some universal trepidation that speaks to us, daring us to examine the depths of our own souls for wickedness? Perhaps we are captivated by the dark human and preternatural influences which haunt the overzealous Macbeth throughout this piece, bringing him ever closer to ruination and despair. This mystical and violent play explores the meaning of ambition, envy and morality to society and to the individual. Even if you have read or seen this popular Shakespearian tragedy, this production, directed by Mark Abram-Copenhaver, with its all female cast, will make you encounter it anew. Performances will be held in the Little Theatre.
