A small but carefully selected exhibit of the photographs of Frederick Sommer (1905-1999) will feature outstanding examples from the different styles of his sixty-year career. Not well known and living quietly for decades in a small Arizona town, Sommer influenced several generations of photographers with his experimental images. The exhibit includes an Arizona landscape, a nude, a study of chicken parts, a beautiful print made from a blob of paint on cellophane, a collage, and other key examples of his life’s work. The Snite Museum is one of the select institutions honoring Sommer this year, along with the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Nelson-Atkins Gallery in Kansas City.
