Rosita's Day of the Dead
October 8, 2005
Add Review/CommentPraised by critics and audiences alike, “Rosita’s Day of the Dead,” the brain child of writer/creator Rodrigo Duarte-Clark and actress/comedienne Ruby Nelda Perez, is a one-woman show which explores life, death, and everything in between through the eyes of Rosita, the colorful restaurateur with a penchant for storytelling. This thoroughly entertaining piece will serve up plenty of humor and heart when it makes its appearance in the Moreau Center for the Arts Little Theatre on Saturday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. You will be drawn in by Rosita’s spicy tales and intuitive examination of the people who have touched her life and community. Ruby Nelda Perez’s performance will leave you utterly amazed, as she skillfully darts between stories, taking on the persona of the characters about whom she speaks. This sequel to 1994’s “Doña Rosita’s Jalapeño Kitchen,” rumored to be part two of a trilogy, continues the saga of the lovable and down-to-earth Rosita. Rodrigo Duarte-Clark conceived this character specifically for Ruby Nelda Perez, with whom he had worked at El Teatro de la Esperanza, a theatre collective based in California. Duarte-Clark’s work tenderly embraces Latino culture, pays homage to the beautiful complexity of a woman’s life, and ponders how choices and obligations affect life’s outcomes. Threaded throughout this play is an examination of death from the perspective of the Latino culture, and exploration of the universal human challenges of reconciliation and bereavement. While this piece is performed largely in English, the occasional smattering of Spanish and Spanglish, interwoven throughout, only adds to the spell, making the audience feel that, for a time, they are truly part of Rosita’s world. Perhaps Duarte-Clark’s greatest achievement is his seemingly effortless amalgamation of pure theatrical grace, innate sense of comedy, and keen social observation. Audiences have certainly shown their appreciation time and again as Ruby Nelda Perez has toured the Americas portraying Rosita for the last eleven years. Ruby Nelda Perez, a former drama major of Texas A&I University, continues to enjoy a long and fruitful career as actress, teacher, and artistic director. Renowned for her incredible acting range, she has received numerous accolades from her peers. She currently resides in San Antonio, and has remained part of the theatre collective, Los Actores de San Antonio. In 1997, the San Antonio Theatre Coalition recognized Ms. Perez as a Living Legend. She spends much of her time touring the Americas in the role of Rosita, as well as giving lectures and workshops. Rich in vibrancy, “Rosita’s Day of the Dead” is a thoroughly enjoyable and soulful journey not to be missed. There can be little doubt that, between Rosita’s culinary cleverness and her easy conversation, you will find yourself clamoring for more. Prepare yourself to be satiated with entertainment.
