The Magical Toy Shop of Dr. Coppélius and Repertory
May 4-May 5, 2007
Add Review/Comment“The Magical Toy Shop of Dr. Coppélius” centers on two young lovers who overcome hilarious obstacles but find a way to live happily ever after. When handsome young Franz visits the toy shop of the mysterious inventor, Doctor Coppélius, he encounters Dr. Coppélius’ beautiful niece Coppélia, who is in reality a mechanical doll. Franz becomes infatuated with her, much to the dismay of his sweetheart, Swanilda. She in turn decides to play a prank on Franz by dressing up as the doll and pretending to come to life. In the end, all turns out well, and Franz and Swanilda celebrate their wedding while their friends perform merry folk dances. The ballet is based on the 1870 comic ballet “Coppélia” with music by Léo Delibes. Choreography is by Jill Tulchinsky, artistic director of Conservatory of Dance. At the May 4 performance, about 30 elementary students from Conservatory’s outreach program will perform, portraying Russian dolls and village girls.
