Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series
April 19, 2007
Add Review/CommentThe fourth in the Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series, this performance features The Merriman Trio with special guest, Rich Cohen on alto saxophone. The remainder of the trio are South Bend musicians Mary Merriman on double bass, and Stephen Merriman on drums. The trio with saxophone, a classic trio configuration, was made famous by Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Branford Marsalis. This concert offers an opportunity to experience the art of jazz in downtown South Bend, that is affordable and family friendly. The performance will be two sets with a 20 minute intermission. Refreshments will be available before and during the concert. Cash bar. Rich Cohen, hails from the east coast, where his formative years consisted of a mix of classical training and participation in an award-winning high school jazz program. Since relocating to the Midwest in the early 90’s, Rich has worked extensively throughout the club circuit of northern Indiana and southern Michigan. Rich’s style of playing is melodically oriented with a sound that reflects the influences of a number of alto greats, most notably Jackie McLean and Kenny Garrett. Stephen and Mary Merriman put their energy into the art of the jazz trio, and promoting jazz in the South Bend area. They plan to continue bringing high quality jazz artists through Merrimans' Playhouse. Location: Recital Hall, Century Center
