Arizona artist Zarco Guerrero will present a retrospective exhibit of his masks and sculptures in the Museum as well as a Day of the Dead altar installation (Dia de los Muertos ofrenda) to honor Cesar Chavez. Guerrero has had one-man shows in Mexico and throughout the United States. He is the founder of Xicanindio Artes, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to better understanding of Chicano and Native American arts. In 1984, PBS broadcasted a national documentary about his art entitled The Mask of El Zarco. In 1986 he was awarded the prestigious Japan Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts to study the Noh Masks as an apprentice to Joshun Fukakusa in Kyoto, Japan. From Japan, the artist investigated mask carving in Bali, Indonesia and China. The artist has made annual return visits to continue mask-making endeavors. The Museum’s gallery will include both an exhibition of some of the numerous masks and sculptures created over the years by Guerrero, and his Day of the Dead altar installation (Dìa de los Muertos ofrenda), which he will create on site in late October. During his campus visit Guerrero will present a workshop for area teachers on Saturday, October 29 and one on Mexican folk art for families on Sunday, October 30. The evening of Tuesday, November 1 Guerrero will be the main presenter during the Museum’s annual Day of the Dead celebration. For more information on the workshops, contact Jackie Welsh, curator of education, public programs, 574-631-4435; email: welsh.14@nd.edu. The Museum would like to thank the University’s Institute for Latino Studies for co-sponsoring these annual arts educational programs and celebration.
