The Acting Company presents the American premiere of Polly Teale’s groundbreaking adaptation of Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte’s extraordinary coming-of-age story of one of literature’s most independent and strong-willed women. Recognized as a masterpiece when it published in 1847, Jane Eyre remains a startlingly modern blend of passion, romance and suspense. Jane Eyre is obscure and plain but locked up in the attic of her imagination lives a woman so passionate, so wild, so full of longing, she must be guarded night and day for fear of the havoc she would wreak. Who is this terrifying woman who threatens to destroy Jane's orderly world: a world where Jane has for the first time fallen in love. Teale’s stunning visual imagery and powerful style transform Bronte's great novel into deeply affecting drama. The Acting Company was founded in 1972 by John Houseman and current producing director Margot Harley with members of the first graduating class of Juilliard’s drama division. The Acting Company has performed 122 productions for over 2 million people in 48 states and nine foreign countries. The Company has given a generation of actors the opportunity to master their craft. Alumni members include Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, David Schramm, Jessie L. Martin, Keith David, Lorraine Toussaint, David Ogden Stiers, Mary Lou Rosato, Lisa Banes, Derek Smith, Frances Conroy, Dennis Boutsikaris and Jeffrey Wright. Shuttle service will be provided from the Bertrand, Clubhouse, and Science parking lots.

REMARKABLE performance of Polly Teale's script. The cast was outstanding, and remarkably fluid in their set changes and onstage movements. If Saint Mary's brings The Acting Company back in the future, you owe it to yourself to see them perform: This is the quality of theater that one would expect to see at Steppenwolf or the Goodman--without the Chicago traffic and prices. Kudos to Richard Baxter for an excellent booking decision! Collapse
