Knute Rockne and the Notre Dame-Army Rivalry
November 16, 2006
Add Review/CommentOn November 1, 1913, Notre Dame upset the Cadets of Army 35-13 on the Plain at West Point. The Irish victory was sparked by the football passing of Gus Dorais along with the receiving of Knute Rockne. This contest marked the beginning of what would become, for the next thirty-four years, the marquis game in college football. Bernie Kish, Ph.D., will trace Rockne’s involvement in the Notre Dame-Army game as player and coach at his lecture, Knute Rockne and the Notre Dame-Army Rivalry. Dr. Kish will also discuss Rockne’s role in New York City being named the annual site for the game, the beginning of the Subway Alumni, notable games and personalities, and the decision in 1947 to terminate the series. The lecture is offered in conjunction with the Center for History’s exhibit, Rockne: Crossing the Last Chalk Line.
