The Beach Boys have embodied the spirit of California to a worldwide audience and as they mark their 40th anniversary, the band continues to ride the crest of a wave unequalled in America’s musical history. Since lead-singer Mike Love penned the lyrics to The Beach Boys’ first hit, “Surfin’” in 1961, the band has had a string of chart-topping songs that includes eternal anthems of American youth: “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and “Rock and Roll Music.” The Beach Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide, received 32 RIAA Platinum and Gold record awards, and has performed more concerts than any major rock band in history. On July 4, 1985, The Beach Boys played to an afternoon crowd of one million in Philadelphia. The same evening they performed for over 750,000 people on the Mall in Washington and the day’s historical achievement was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1988 The Beach Boys released their biggest selling multi-platinum hit “Kokomo” which topped Billboard’s pop music and video charts, was nominated for a Grammy award, and was featured on the soundtrack to the motion picture “Cocktail.” The band was awarded the Special Award of Merit at the 1988 American Music Awards and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later that year. In 2001 The Beach Boys were honored at the Grammy Awards by receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2003 Rolling Stone magazine named the group’s album “Pet Sounds” as the number two “Greatest Album of All Time.” Most recently The Beach Boys released “Good Vibrations 40th Anniversary Commemorative CD” in June of 2006 and in August will release “Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary” which will be available in stores in August. Legendary British Invasion artists Eric Burdon & The Animals are confirmed as special guests. Led by Eric Burdon with his distinctive blues style, The Animals were part of the first wave of The British Invasion on American radio and The Ed Sullivan show. Starting with "House of the Rising Sun", and then "We Gotta Get out of this Place", "It's My Life", "Monterey", "Sky Pilot" and "When I Was Young", Eric Burdon and The Animals were atop of the American record sales charts in competition with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Dave Clark Five from the UK, and The Beach Boys from the U.S. Eric Burdon also recorded with the R&B band War, including the song "Spill The Wine". Now a resident of Palm Springs, California, Burdon is making a rare Midwest concert appearance, when he joins The Beach Boys at The Morris in South Bend.
