This performance is a collection of short plays by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein, who sadly and prematurely, passed away early this year. Published in 1999, the scripts were written at different points in her career and characteristically use smart and sassy humor to reveal Wasserstein’s world view; a view which places the lives of women front and center and truthfully reflects the challenges we face in terms of our work lives, our families and friendships, our relationships, and finding our way within American culture. Wendy Wasserstein appeared as a Sesquicentennial speaker at Saint Mary's College in 1994, giving a sharp, witty, and inspiring talk on "My Life in the Theatre" to a large and appreciative crowd in O'Laughlin Auditorium. Director and Associate Professor Katie Sullivan, says, “Perhaps because I spent that day on campus with her years ago, or perhaps because my first play in Chicago after graduating from college was a Wasserstein play, I am feeling the sting of her death quite strongly. America, indeed the larger world, needs, really needs, more women's voices in the theatre. The recent Tony Awards broadcast brought that home so visibly: male writers, directors, producers in great abundance and a lone woman or two among them. To have Wendy's voice silenced years before she would have retired from writing and thinking and making us laugh and speaking her mind is just a pure shame.”
