The Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP) was an important group of Mexican printmakers active between 1937 and 1949. They created, in poster form, an art designed for public display and mass distribution, with the goal of stimulating Mexican political and social reform. In this way, the Taller's powerful political prints served the Mexican people by depicting the harsh and oppressive conditions of the peasant class, atrocities of war, and social injustices resulting from corruption. This followed humanitarian ideals expressed earlier as a result of the Mexican Revolution and subsequently supported by President Lázaro Cárdenas. Cárdenas was responsible for distribution of land to peasants, unionization rights and wages, and the establishment of a national printing group, which subsequently became the TGP. The Museum thanks Charles S. Hayes '65 for generously lending these prints for exhibition and for the promised gift of works from his TGP collection.
