Larry Shue's The Foreigner won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critic Circle Awards as the Best New American Play. The New York reviewer said, "I laughed start to finish at one comic surprise after another." Set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia, it tells the story of Charlie, a pathological shy young man who fears making conversation with strangers. Charlie is brought to the lodge by his friend "Froggy" Le Seuer, who, before he leaves, tells all at the lodge that Charlie speaks no English and is from an exotic foreign country. When Charlie hears more than he should about the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate, he decides to take action. This leads to an unusual climax in which the "good guys" emerge triumphant.
