Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance is a hilarious farce. The London Based Carl Rosa Opera Company is dedicated to producing and touring Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas.

      Having seen this show done from a crew of students at Trinity College, Carmarthen, Wales- I was looking forward to viewing a professional, critically acclaimed company's take on Gilbert & Sullivan's... Expand

      Having seen this show done from a crew of students at Trinity College, Carmarthen, Wales- I was looking forward to viewing a professional, critically acclaimed company's take on Gilbert & Sullivan's comic masterpiece. The Stage is set, and when the curtain rose, I was impressed at the magical set that was before my eyes. But then it started. I have in no doubt belief that most of these performers have highly skilled voices, but as a package, most also lacked the depth and talent of comedy acting. Gilbert & Sullivan have written a sublime show that oozes rib tickling moments of comedy genius. But unfortunately none of the cast, apart from the odd chuckle from one of the supporting cast, nothing stood out, and was left walking out of the theatre dissapointed indeed that they have missed out on a great opportunity to wow people. Indeed, I was left with the memory of the student production I saw back in Carmarthen, that obviously they knew how to justify this excellent show. Collapse
